New Beginnings

So, after a trip to the garden centre and a rummage through the seed packets from last year I bit the bullet and got sowing. I started over a month ago and kept some vague notes so here is an update of what I have been up to.

21.02.2011

Sowed indoors:
  • 4 x cloves of French Garlic Cristo in 3.5 inch pots - all germinated
  • 6 x Broad Beans (Sutton) in plastic bottles which have had the tops cut off and some holes punched in the bottom - approx the size of 3 inch pots - 5 germinated, 1 went mouldy
  • 10 x Tomatoes (Gardeners Delight) in modules - 7 germinated
  • 10 x Beetroot (Boltardy) in modules - all germinated
  • 5 x Red Cabbage in modules - all germinated
  • 10 Red Pepper (California Wonder) in modules - 7 germinated
  • 10 Red Chillis (Cayenne) in modules - 9 germinated
  • 10 x Bambino Main Crop Potatoes - chitting in egg boxes
  • 10 x Vales Emerald First Early Potatoes - chitting in egg boxes
All were sown indoors in MPC and placed in a sunny window position in the kitchen. All were watered immediately after sowing and were kept moist but being careful not to let them become waterlogged. Those seedlings in modules had the clear plastic cover on top to aid germination which was removed as soon as seedlings became to big and started to hit the roof.

Broad Beans were in recycled Robinsons Squash bottles with holes cut in the bottom. These worked really well and gave the plants lots of room to grow into.
